Brightening Skincare That Actually Works

Our beauty editor tested over 20 radiance-boosters. Here are 6 of her faves.

Radiant, even-toned skin is within reach, thanks to brightening skincare that revives a dull, lacklustre complexion. More glow? Yes, please! But not all products are created equal and it can be tricky to find the ones that do what they're supposed to. Beauty editor Moh Shuying tried dozens to bring you the best.

Lancome Clarifique Dual Essence ($140)

This essence-infused toner is a hardworking multi-tasker. It not only boosts skin’s natural renewal process to improve your complexion’s clarity, tone and texture, it also lightens existing dark spots and improves the overall heath and strength of your complexion. To be used after cleansing, each bottle comes with a unique “whisk” in the centre to help mix the formula. Even though it was only launched earlier this year, I’ve already finished one bottle and am on to my second one.

Clarins Bright Plus Advanced Brightening Dark Spot-Targeting Serum ($136)

If you’ve ever tried an oxygen facial, you know that the infusion of skin rejuvenating oxygen immediately revitalises and brightens your complexion. And this is exactly what this serum does. It’s infused with rose-myrtle and acerola seed extracts that help your skin cells to capture and consume oxygen, instantly refreshing your skin to give it a rosy glow. The serum also has a brightening complex that works to inhibit the over production of melanin and lighten existing dark spots.

Albion Embeage Diofons ($270)

This mineral-rich serum (it contains twelve minerals!) not only helps to boost skin turnover and cell division, it also increases collagen and hyaluronic acid production so your complexion looks more youthful, plumper and is better able to reflect light for a radiant glow. It also has a cocktail of Centella Asiatica, Perichlaena Richardii and White Ginger Lily extracts to nourish skin and increase overall radiance.

For Beloved One Flawless Brightening Ethyl Ascorbic Acid Bio-Cellulose Mask ($63 for a box of three)

I’ve been using this twice a week for years because I love how it gives my complexion an instant glow. Not only does it fit and sit comfortably on your face, it was created specifically for Asian skin that is prone to sallowness. Just 15 minutes once to twice a week will help to reduce the formation of melanin and reinforce skin health so your complexion looks more luminous and even-toned.

Chanel Le Blanc Essence Lotion ($97)

This gentle milky lotion not only helps to plump, soften and hydrate skin, it also works to treat tone and texture so your complexion looks brighter. Infused with ume flower extract, ume flower oil and a vitamin C derivative, this revitalises and strengthens skin against external attacks, boosts radiance, treats fine lines and refines your overall complexion. For best results, pat in the lotion and massage gently for 10 seconds.

Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules Radiance Renewal Serum ($81)

Each bottle contains 30 capsules filled with an oil-serum infused with vitamin C and ceramides that not only helps to brighten, but also nourish and strengthen skin’s natural moisture barrier for a smoother complexion. Made with oil soluble Vitamin C, which optimises delivery to skin’s surface for a more targeted delivery, this also helps to protect skin against free radical damage and fight against hyper-pigmentation.
